Now Available: Jethro Tull, STAND UP: THE ELEVATED EDITION
If you’ve read music journalism to any significant degree, then you’re well aware of the phenomenon known as the sophomore slump, wherein an artist takes everything they’ve ever learned in their life, applies the whole lot to their debut album, and then finds themselves left wanting creatively when they get around to putting together their second album. We only reference this phenomenon in order to underline the fact that Jethro Tull absolutely, positively did not succumb to it when they released their sophomore album, STAND UP.
Indeed, STAND UP found Jethro Tull shifting away from the blues-rock stylings that had infiltrated their first album and truly beginning to strut their folk-rock stuff, as it were. You can attribute a portion of that evolution to the arrival of guitarist Martin Barre, no doubt, but it’s just as easy to argue that the band simply found the sound that worked best for their musical sensibilities and ran with it. Either way, the end result is an endeavor that’s getting an expanded reissue, one which we’ve dubbed STAND UP: THE ELEVATED EDITION.

The first disc features Steven Wilson’s new stereo mixes of the original album, along with a number of rare recordings, including an unreleased version of “Bouree,” four songs recorded at the BBC, and stereo single mixes for “Living In The Past” and “Driving Song.” The second disc features the band performing live in Sweden in January 1969 – and as openers for Jimi Hendrix, no less! – as well as mono single mixes for “Living In The Past” and “Driving Song,” plus two radio spots promoting the album.
And did we mention the DVD? Because there’s a DVD, and it includes concert footage of the band performing “To Be Sad Is A Mad Way To Be” and “Back To The Family,” Steven Wilson’s remix of the original album in PCM stereo and DD/DTS 5.1 surround sound, a 96/24 flat transfer of the original stereo master tapes, plus a 96/24 flat transfer of the original mono and stereo mixes of “Living In The Past” and “Driving Song.”
