If Ice-T is best known today for his work on TV's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the performer's music remains a key part of his resume; on this day in 1991, he was part of the first-ever Lollapalooza tour. POWER was the rapper's second album and, as its name suggests, was even more hard-hitting than his debut. The rhymes are dense and intense on brutal slices of gangsta life including “High Rollers,” “Soul on Ice” and single “I'm Your Pusher,” which riffs on a Curtis Mayfield anti-drug classic while also dissing LL Cool J. Cut in L.A. with producer Afrika Islam, the 1988 Sire set was praised by such outlets as The New York Times (“Constantly menacing, the album affords no breathing room”) and was eventually certified Platinum.
