Joni Mitchell EARLY YEARS Product Shot

When discussing Joni Mitchell, you don’t need to make any sort of clarification about whether she’s the best of her decade, the best of her gender, or anything else. All you need to say is that she’s one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever, and you can stop right there: you’re on safe ground.

Mitchell released her debut album in 1968, and the pace she maintained as a composer from then onward was considerable, but make no mistake: she’s also been a prolific performer, performing numerous concerts over the course of her career. Now, for the first time, Mitchell is opening her vault, teaming with Rhino to kick off a new series of boxed-set releases called THE JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES, which will give fans an opportunity to hear her work in a way that they’ve never heard before...and some of it they’ll never have heard at all!

On October 30, Rhino releases JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES VOL. 1: THE EARLY YEARS (1963-1967), and if you noted the year that she released her debut album, then you’ll realize that the title is spot-on. This material is as early as it gets, and you’ll be enjoying plenty of it: the 5-CD set features nearly six hours of unreleased home, live, and radio recordings, offered in chronological order to literally provide listeners with an opportunity to hear Mitchell evolve as a performer and songwriter. Even more awesome is the inclusion of 29 Mitchell-penned songs which have never before been released...or, more specifically, none of them have been released in a form that featured Mitchell’s vocals.

This set will also be available digitally, of course, but fear not: we’ll also be offering up some vinyl versions, too.

There’s EARLY JONI – 1963, a single LP pressed on 180-gram vinyl and with a cover featuring a self-portrait which marks Mitchell’s first new art in many moons. In addition, there’s also LIVE AT CANTERBURY HOUSE – 1967, a 3-LP set which is also pressed on 180-gram vinyl and which features Mitchell’s full three-set performance from October 27, 1967.  The only catch: it’s going to be a limited-edition set, so get your orders in quickly if you want to secure one of the 10,000 copies.

All of these releases will be available on October 30, but we know you’re already freaking out about how far away that is, so how’s this for a deal? We’ve already begun the teasing process by putting one of the tracks on Spotify: the first song from Mitchell’s 1963 performance at Saskatoon radio station CFQC AM, a version of “House of the Rising Sun.”

Give it a spin!

Once you’ve managed to shake off your amazement, prepare to be stricken by even more, because we’re closing out this post with the track listing of the whole shebang, and it’s not for the faint of heart:
