WATCH Wolfgang Van Halen Play ERUPTION on Bass Guitar

As the fallout from the (lack of a suitable) Eddie Van Halen tribute during this year's Grammy "In Memoriam" segment continues to rain down on the world of rock, let's take a look back to last summer, and the likely source of much of the controversy.

Wolfgang Van Halen has revealed that the Grammys initially approached him to perform his father's famous guitar solo, "Eruption," as part of the show's on-air tribute: "I don't think anyone could have lived up to what my father did for music but himself."

While the Grammy's answer to filling that slot has fallen flat with a large swatch of Van Halen fans, others have asked the question: where did they get the idea for Wolfgang Van Halen to play "Eruption" in the first place? The answer: Wolfgang himself, who last summer showed off his prowess for the legendary guitar solo on the bass guitar via Twitter. The young musician wasn't just showing off; the video was in response to a troll who claimed that the forthcoming Mammoth album from the young Van Halen was destined to be "just a revised version of 'Eruption' on bass."
